The IE Twins and I enjoyed watching all of them but our favorites were Horseland and Busytown Mysteries.
I love the Horseland series and found that this one was excellent. It seemed to touch on a few more “serious” issues then the ones I have seen in the past but then…perhaps…I paid a tad more attention since I had to review this one and the others were more leisure views.
While the topics were delicate and a bit mature they definitely opened doors for my girls to ask questions. For instance in one of the episodes, The Secret, one of the characters has Dyslexia and is made to feel dumb and left out….eventually one of the older characters reveals to him that he too has dyslexia and gives him a few tips and pointers on how to work with Dyslexia. My girls had never heard of Dyslexia before so it was a unique way to educate them  about the subject.
Busytown Mysteries is fun to watch because everything is “Who?, What?, When?, Where?, How?” which I love because it makes your child think.  Every Mystery has to be figured out. While the clues may seem easy to an adult to a child it is definitely a challenge. I  have a hard time teaching the twins to think outside the box but they seem to really enjoy the concept of thinking outside the box when watching Busytown Mysteries.
Each video we received was enjoyable to watch.  Fun DVD’s allow fun times  where you can sit with your kids and just mellow out together watching a video.

Realities

Spill Canvas

synopsis

Nick Thomas, the singer, guitarist, and mastermind behind The Spill Canvas, recorded his first songs at age 15 while growing up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota and honed his largely acoustic-based style playing solo shows in and around his hometown. Calling himself The Spill Canvas, Thomas released the raw and emotive Sunsets and Car Crashes, which earned him eager fans around the country. After officially transitioning from solo act to full-fledged rock band, The Spill Canvas recorded their dynamic debut full-length, One Fell Swoop, with producer Ed Rose (The Get-Up Kids), releasing it on One Eleven in May of 2005 to great acclaim, eventually selling more than 50,000 copies.

In 2006, The Spill Canvas signed to Sire Records, which released their major-label debut full-length No Really, I’m Fine in October 2007. Produced by Neal Avron (Fall Out Boy, Wallflowers, Yellowcard), the album climbed to No. 2 on Billboard’s Heatseeker’s chart and spawned the single “All Over You.” Over the years, the band have toured with Yellowcard, Motion City Soundtrack, Straylight Run, Mae, The Plain White T’s, Augustana, the Hush Sound, and One Republic, and have graced the stages of Austin’s annual music festival SXSW, New Jersey’s Bamboozle Festival and the Vans Warped Tour — earning them a growing loyal fanbase.

mythoughts

You must listen to this with out children and without interruption…just allow yourself to get lost in the great music and you’ll find a very happy place!

Spill Canvas has done a great job in creating an escape CD for adults. This isn’t a tween band or  kid’s band but something just for mom. I love it.

Rich, powerful music that moves you gets you rocking and reminds you that you really aren’t as old as you think…ok, well, maybe that last part is just for me.

But this group rocks!

My favorite song was “My Song”…but every track has quickly become a favorite.  The acoustic tracks offer a more jazzy, blues and rock feel to their songs. It was a nice change and gave the songs a completely different vibe. The acoustic version make you feel as if you are in  local NY nightclub enjoying a date with the man of your dreams…especially 10,000 nights. Very romantic vibe. Very sultry and sexy…amazing what changing a song to an acoustic style will do.

My least favorite was The Bone. Didn’t really do much for me. A little too intense, almost headache vibe for me…but overall the CD was sensational and definitely one I’d recommend to my friends. Looking forward to hearing more from Spill Canvas.

What are The Odds?

Monkey Monkey Music

synopsis

NYC-based musician/educator Meredith LeVande could truly be termed a “Renaissance woman of children’s music.”  Meredith not only holds undergraduate degrees in Women’s Studies and English, she also has a master’s degree in music and a law degree!  Drawing from all these disciplines for her multi-faceted work with children, Meredith heads up a project with the marvelously mischievous moniker Monkey Monkey Music, with a focus on “putting the child back into children’s music.”

Five years ago Meredith’s debut album, Monkey Monkey Music with Meredith LeVande, became an instant hit with families nationwide, was a Parenting magazine “Pick,” and was in rotation on Sirius Satellite Radio, earning a grassroots reputation as a classic children’s recording. Meredith LeVande has, since 2005, devoted herself to performing for children in intimate settings, becoming a favorite among NYC area families and creating a repertoire that has grown organically due to her one-on-one interactions with children of virtually every culture imaginable.

With the new Monkey Monkey Music CD, What Are the Odds?, Meredith has created something remarkable, finding the middle road between baby songs and pop band songs where kids’ lyrics are simply added to music that would otherwise be played for adults.  Meredith’s music is not only child-friendly, it’s truly child appropriate, developed with the healthy growth of the young child in mind.
mythoughts

So very cute. Your preschooler and kindergartner will love this CD. What Are The Odds cleverly combines learning and music together to create a fun, educational and entertaining experience.

My girls enjoyed this CD while listening to it in the car and at home but they may be on the “growing out stage” of the age group that would enjoy this compilation of songs. The twins just turned 7 and entered 2nd grade so they may get a bit restless with the tunes. My girls had fun with the music and enjoyed it…I just think at this age we might be on our last leg of this type of music. But we’ll have to see…they had a fun time listening and have played the CD repeatedly especially when cleaning their room. Not wuite sure on that connection but whatever works, right?

Our favorite was Shake It Loud…where we really did and had fun dancing around together being silly.

Overall we’d give this CD – Two Thumbs UP. You’ll enjoy being silly with your kids. The lyrics are fun and easy to sing along with while in the car or at home. The rhythm has hints of rock and jazz so they will definitely bring a smile to your face.

TO BE RELEASED – AUGUST 31, 2010

Suddenly

All Star Weekend

synopsis

A little more than a year ago the members of Allstar Weekend – Zach, Cameron, Nathan and Michael – were passing out flyers outside the premiere of  Jonas Bothers: The 3-D Concert Experience, hoping to be discovered.  Today, after a whirlwind year of writing, recording, and touring, the band is releasing their debut album Suddenly on Hollywood Records.

Citing influences from from blink-182 to Prince, Allstar Weekend enlisted the help of three heavy-hitting producers to capture their sound: Howard Benson (Daughtry, My Chemical Romance), John Feldmann (Goldfinger, Good Charlotte), and S*A*M & Sluggo (Cobra Starship, Metro Station).  High energy pop-punk from start to finish, Suddenly is already #5 on the iTunes Rock Chart and features the smash singles “A Different Side of Me,” which hit number one on the Radio Disney Countdown, and “Dance Forever,” the video for which debuted at number two on the iTunes video chart.

The album is available in stores and online now.  Walmart is offering an exclusive version featuring three live performances, while fans who have already downloaded “A Different Side of Me” and “Dance Forever” can complete their album on iTunes for under $5!  Visit AllstarWeekendRocks.com for more information about the band and their debut, as well as a list of the band’s remaining tour dates.

mythoughts

Unless you are dead or an old stick in the mud you are going to enjoy and quite possibly fall in love with the guys from All Star Weekend.

Four adorable teenagers, Zach, Cameron, Nathan and Michael - create this fun group of young heartthrobs and up and coming hit sensations.

My daughters and I have seen all the posts and plugs on television concerning All Star Weekend and while we were interested we weren’t outright sold on their music until we had the chance to review this cd, Suddenly.

Again, we had the chance to listen to the album over and over again on our 6 hour drive to visit my sister.  Hands down “Hey Princess” was our #1 favorite. I challenge you to know start dancing, hopping, clapping or bobbing your head while listen to this song….so cute!  Definitely geared for the younger teen or tween but as a parent, I enjoyed it right along with the girls. In fact whenever they asked me which CD I wanted to listen to…this was my choice!

Dance Forever reminded me a bit of the retro 80’s vibe which was great for me and had the twins jamming away in their car seats in back.  A Different Side of Me….has great lyrics to sing along with. A lot of wisdom to appreciate who you are in the lyrics too. Kind of surprising but it was a great asset.  My least favorite was Amy…not because it was a bad song, no it was very cute, but after the first three songs being rather fast and upbeat…well, it just kind of didn’t belong (at that moment).

Make sure you pick up  your copy of the CD…but remember the only way to listen to this is with the music cranked all the way…’cause you are going to want to sing along!

2nd Avenue

No Justice

synopsis

Since 2005, the name No Justice has become a familiar fixture on Texas radio, charting seven Top 10 singles and a pair of No. 1s in only a four-year span. During that time, the five-piece from Stillwater, Oklahoma also became a polished touring machine, playing nearly 200 shows a year and every square inch of roadhouse in the Lone Star State and then some. After recording three albums and building up a formidable grassroots following, No Justice lead singer and guitarist Steve Rice realized that even a state the size of Texas has its borders. It was time for No Justice to introduce themselves to the rest of the country.

By late 2009, the group had landed a new record deal, partnered with a veteran artist manager and made the decision to record their next project, called Second Avenue, in Music City, USA. The band’s Country leanings were certainly a fit for Nashville, says Rice, while the No Justice sound had developed over the years into a well-balanced compound of roots, red dirt, country and blues.

“We’re honored to be associated with the music and those legendary musicians from Texas and Oklahoma”, says Rice. “We have a strong connection to our fans down there. No Justice is a diverse band that’s been inspired by a lot of different artists, and because of that, we appeal to just about anybody, from 5-year olds to 50-year olds, from cowboys to punk rock chicks.”

Like Rice, the rest of No Justice, guitarist Jerry Payne, bassist Joey Trevino, drummer Armando Lopez and new lead guitarist Cody Patton – are excited about the future. The new album, produced by Dexter Green (Collective Soul), is their first studio effort in several years and the band’s first album for their new label, Carved Records.

“We’re really proud of this new record,” says guitarist Payne.”I think our fans both new and old – are going to enjoy this. Bringing in Dex Green was really valuable in refining the No Justice sound. We’re also thrilled to be on board with Carved Records now. Tim and his team are great people just as focused as we are. It’s an exciting time for all of us.”

“The stars just kind of aligned for us when it came to signing No Justice,” explains Carved Records CEO Tim Porter. Carved had just opened its doors and we were looking to sign an act that had a strong identity. We aren’t interested in cookie-cutter bands at this label; we want artists that know how to put on a live show, write great songs and aren’t afraid to work. No Justice has all three in spades.

True enough, the No Justice resume speaks directly to their hard-touring work ethic, having shared stages with acts like Willie Nelson, Dierks Bentley, Charlie Robison, Billy Joe Shaver, Gary Allan, Cross Canadian Ragweed, David Allan Coe, Pat Green, Chris Ledoux, Jack Ingram and countless others during the band’s career. It was their reputation as one of the region’s premier live acts that resulted in their 2007 release, Live at Billy Bob’s Texas, an honor for any band that has played the legendary Texas honky-tonk.

In early 2010, No Justice returned to the studio to begin their latest effort, Second Avenue.

“We called it Second Avenue because we felt like we were going in a different direction with our ideas on this record. It’s kind of a rebirth for us, like we’ve got a second chance to do some things we’ve been wanting to do for a while now” says Rice.

The lead singer found himself writing or co-writing eight of the tracks selected for the final album, often collaborating with Nashville songwriters like Clint Ingersoll, Derek Hoke and Danny Green. Special guest appearances by Rebecca Lynn Howard and Johnny Cooper rounded out the band’s first full-album Nashville recording experience. The new record should be out sometime in the spring, Rice says.

Although fans will certainly recognize that familiar No Justice sound, the time spent in Music City certainly won’t escape the ears of Country radio, either. It’s a natural evolution for the talented group from Stillwater. Or, as Rice simply calls it, “just a facelift”

mythoughts

No Justice…never heard of them before this CD (sorry guys)! Now that they are on my radar I will have my eyes and ears open. Totally enjoyed their 2nd Avenue CD.  A little mix of rock, country and style created a fun, exciting selection of songs.

I love music that brings you into the sounds, the rhythms and the lyrics….where before you know it you are singing and strumming along.

I had the chance to review this while driving the wonderful 6 hour drive to visit my sister recently and not only did I sing and strum along…I had a full on rock concert in the car…and might I say I was amazing!! lol

What I liked the most is that the twins were rocking out with me.  I love the way artist create a crossover blend to emphasis who they are.  With these guys coming from Texas you can clearly hear their Western and Country roots but I wouldn’t ever call them exclusive Country.

With fun guitar riffs and jamming drums you will soon realize that while they are Texas boys they can rock it like nobodies business!

Whether you are 19 or 99 you’re going to enjoy the 2nd Avenue CD from No Justice…it’s music that just makes life better!

Hello!  I wanted to introduce you to a great band I am now working with, No Justice.  Their fourth album and debut on Carved Records was released this week, and their single “2nd Avenue” will hit radio in August.  The song has been stuck in my head for the past week (in a good way!), so I hope you enjoy it as well – either way, feedback is always appreciated! The embed code for the song stream is in the links section, and have review copies if you’re interested (digital and physical).  Thanks for your support!

Sweetpea Beauty
(A Girl After God’s Own Heart)

Veggie Tales

synopsis

Find out in this fairy “Veggie” tale about the real meaning of true beauty.

mythoughts

When you have daughters….you soon learn that even if you tell them daily they are smart, beautiful, funny and God’s perfect creation…the world will chip away at who they are.

I think my girls are amazing and so far have been able to shelter them from silly concepts of what they look like or should look like…. they are only 7 after all!!! But it is clearly evident that the ideas are out there.  Even when a cartoon character says something innocent and in humor such as “Does this make me my butt look fat”…the twins will take that in and make the same comment.  Subtlety does work on children.

So it was with great joy that we received a copy of Sweetpea Beauty. True to Veggietale fashion is it wonderfully entertaining cartoon that showcases God’s grace, creation and love.

While watching Sweetpea Beauty my girls literally did not make a sound for an hour. The music was wonderful, the story line was great and it reinforced the idea to my girls that they are beautiful, smart, funny and perfect just the way God created them.
