“War Horse,” the Academy Award®-nominated Best Picture, is a story of incredible friendship, loyalty, courage, hope and tenacity. Based on the Tony Award®-winning play, and set against the sweeping canvas of World War I, this deeply heartfelt tale begins with the remarkable friendship between a feisty colt named Joey and his young trainer Albert (Jeremy Irvine). When they’re forced apart by war, the film follows Joey’s extraordinary journey as he changes and inspires the lives of everyone he meets. No matter where they go or what they experience both boy and horse keep forging ahead, driven by devotion and the hope of returning home. Filled with spectacularly rich visuals, “War Horse” is one of the most powerful and moving stories of friendship and love ever filmed.

My Thoughts

I had anticipated seeing this movie at the theaters but before I had an opportunity to do so…it was gone. Thankfully I was able to review it on the Blu-Ray/DVD combo pack and share it with my family.

War Horse is rated PG-13 but my daughters are very soft-hearted so there were some moments were it was just a bit too much for them. Overall, it was a great movie to watch as a family and share a little bit of what life was like in that time period.

I thought the movie offered a lot of “teaching moments” for my daughters. As a home school family…that is always something you are looking for. Love, loss, pain and joy are all emotions clearly reflected in this film.

War Horse is not a light, fluff movie but one that will leave you thinking and pondering the moments and metaphors throughout the film.

DreamWorks Studios Release “Real Steel” on Blu-Ray & DVD January 24th (Review)

Posted in CD & DVD Reviews, DreamWorks, IE Mommy Posts, Movie & Video Trailers by The IE Mommy
Jan 27 2012

On January 24th, DreamWorks Studios releasedREAL STEEL on Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD! Set in the not-so-distant future where boxing has gone high-tech and 2000-pound steel robots have taken over the ring, this heart-warming story of a winning father-son team film stars Hugh Jackman, Evangeline Lilly, Kevin Durand, and Anthony Mackie. Bonus material includes behind-the-scenes features revealing the magic behind the sets and characters, Bloopers, and more!

The #1 movie in the country for two consecutive weeks during its theatrical run, REAL STEEL is directed by Shawn Levy (Night At the Museum franchise, Date Night and What Happens in Vegas), produced by Steven Spielberg (Saving Private Ryan, Schindler’s List), with a screenplay by John Gatins (Coach Carter, Summer Catch). Set in the not-so-distant future where boxing has gone high-tech and 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots have taken over the ring, the film stars Hugh Jackman (X-Men franchise, Australia) as Charlie Kenton, Evangeline Lilly (TV’s Lost, The Hurt Locker) as Bailey Tallet, Dakota Goyo (Thor) as Max Kenton, Kevin Durand (I Am Number Four, X-Men Origins: Wolverine) as Ricky, and Anthony Mackie (The Adjustment Bureau, The Hurt Locker) as Finn.

My Thoughts

Without a doubt this will be one of my all time favorites.  Let me clarify that I like Hugh Jackman but I’m not necessarily a Hugh Jackman fanatic. I can either take him or leave him…so as I gush about this movie please do not think it’s just because of him. I thought the movie was utterly fantastic. The characters and the actors did a great job in creating a story that you were compelled to watch.

We found ourselves rooting on Max Kenton (Dakota Goyo) when he was a little more sassy or smart alec then a normal kid should be.  We could see how much Baily (Evangeline Lilly) truly loved Charlie (Hugh Jackman) and most of all we (my husband, daughters and myself) became totally engrossed in the fights. Yes! I know…they were animated robots but it was so cool!

A little known secret of mine is that I love boxing. Oh no! Um, not me boxing but I like to watch boxing matches. Probably not something most people would think about me. So it was doubly exciting to watch the scenarios between the boxers, uh I mean robots. You couldn’t help but get into it and feel their pain and victories.  It was pretty easy to see how boxing as we know it could easily transition to a world of boxing bots.  I told you this movie pulled you in.

There were a few curse words throughout the movie that made you cringe and Evangeline Lilly truly can’t help but be sexy but over all I thought it was a great family movie.  This is one movie that is going into the family library and staying there for a long time….or at least until boxing robots are a reality. Hmmm??

DreamWorks Pictures’ “War Horse” Opening December 25th (review)

Posted in 2011 Holiday Showcase, All Things Disney, Big Screen Movies & Television, DreamWorks, IE Review Crew, Movie & Video Trailers by The IE Mommy
Dec 26 2011

DreamWorks Pictures’ “War Horse,” director Steven Spielberg’s epic adventure, is a tale of loyalty, hope and tenacity set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War. “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets—British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse—an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. “War Horse” is one of the great stories of friendship and war— a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is currently on Broadway. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

My Thoughts

War Horse is the story of keeping your promises.  This story tells the life lesson on how through love and destruction you have to keep moving forward. The story begins with Ted Narracott sacrificing his farm to purchase a beautiful thoroughbred colt. He saw something in the horse that no one else did, except for his son. His son Albert names the horse Joey and trains the thoroughbred to work in an attempt to raise the money needed to save their farm. When their crops are flooded, the father is forced to sell Joey to Captain Nicholls in the Calvary. The horse manages to live through World War 1 miraculously and against the odds.

This famous novel was turned into a dramatic movie with the direction of Steven Spielberg and Dream Works Production Company. This story has been reproduced as a novel, children’s stories, as a play and now as a movie. The movie was filmed in England and the scenery is breathtaking.

The story has many parallels about the cost of caring for one another. That is the theme throughout the movie, no matter how things turn out you always keep your promise to take care of others and see them through as best as you can. Each inner story didn’t always end positively, it was World War I there were many lives lost.

I recommend the movie. This is a Steven Spielberg movie however there were several scenes where the computer generated images were not very believable in the war scenes. The acting in a few scenes seemed staged; however emotion is evoked throughout the movie. In fact at one point I grabbed the arm of the person sitting next to me as a result of the dramatic scene.  I liked the movie because every relationship represented was showing one taking care of another. This message is spoken between humans and the animals. It is World War I and yet despite horrible odds Albert and Joey go through the gates together.
