It’s no secret that most of us moms struggle to find precious time. This could mean time for ourselves, time to see friends, or even time to get all the day’s tasks done and dusted. Managing not only our own lives but our children’s lives too (and quite often our partners as well!) can be a very difficult task. With that in mind, it’s little wonder that so many of us stop looking after our health after a while, even if we don’t mean to. The worrying thing about this notion is that sometimes, your lifestyle choices can rub off on your children. You are the first role model they have in their lives, so you need to be very careful about the kinds of examples you set for them. But your own personal health deserves to be valued too. If you have put on weight that you didn’t necessarily want to gain, or if you feel as though you get out of breath more easily than you used to, it could be a sign that you need to start taking care of your health again. Of course, we all see images projected of the perfect parent who manages to work out five times a week, help their kids with their homework and manage date night with the hubby as well (as if it was simple!). Pick and choose your workout times wisely

Ever arrived at the gym only to look at the clock and realise you were meant to pick the kids up from class half an hour ago? It happens to the best of us. Juggling your job around the children’s needs and the housework can be tricky, and everyone is prone to forgetting something every once in awhile. But try and learn from your mistakes. Do you tend to find that the day gets busier and busier as it goes on? Perhaps you are the type of person who tends to say ‘yes’ to a lot of things and eventually you find yourself rushing from appointment to appointment. If this sounds like you, why not try getting your workout in at the very start of the day, before anyone has the chance to hound you about anything? Sure, it means getting up early – not ideal if the last thing you are is a morning person. But it can also help you feel energised and ready to take on the day; something which may surprise you. If you can do so, try getting your workout in before the kids have even got up. That way, it’s one more thing ticked off your ‘to-do list’, and you can spend the rest of your day focusing on the things that really matter.

Focus and fine tune your workout

Ever heard the phrase ‘all the gear, no idea’? Sure, you might feel motivated, have all the right kit and have your fitness goal steady in your mind. But if you don’t attack each gym session with a plan, you will steadily lose interest and your whole routine will stop being structured. Work out when you can work out, write it in your diary and stick to it just like you would any other meeting or appointment. Even if it’s just doing jumping jacks in the TV ad breaks, it all counts! But if you do struggle with your mind going blank the second you stand up to exercise, you may need a ready-made plan to set you off on the right foot. Certain workout and diet plans can be tailor made for your own needs, so take a look at a few different ones until you find what’s suitable for you. Include your children

Say the words ‘working out as a family’ and some strange image of your children performing a bench press will probably come into your mind. But exercising alongside your children doesn’t mean dragging them down to your gym to lift weights and spend an hour on the elliptical. Doing physical activity as a family is great for two reasons. One, it kills two birds with one stone. Combining exercise with family time is not only healthy for everyone, but it means you get to spend more quality time with your kids as well. Secondly, it can make your workout regime much more varied and fun. Getting fit doesn’t mean spending all your time locked in the gym, slaving and sweating away. Involving your kids can open your eyes to other forms of exercise, perhaps even ones where you don’t realise you are exercising. You could go on a family bike ride, which is great for getting kids out of the house and off their phones/tablets. Plus, cycling is an excellent low-intensity exercise which still burns a lot of calories, so you are still staying on plan when it comes to prioritizing your health. Or, you could go to a trampoline park with your children  – a perfect way to grab some ‘mom points’, enjoy yourself and keep fit all in one go. Plus, by including your children you are setting them a good example and laying out the foundations for their own healthy lifestyles in the future. Combine all this with a healthy home cooked diet, and there’s no reason why you can’t have the dream family life and the dream body in 2017.
