As children get older, it’s natural for them to want to spread their wings. Once they reach their mid-teens, most kids are desperate to get out there and get a sense of freedom. A lot of teenagers not only want a chance to feel the freedom that adulthood brings, but are also desperate to get out there and explore.
If your teenager is asking whether they can go traveling, the chances are that if they’re still in school, you’ve told them that they’re too young. However, just because they’re too young to go traveling alone, that doesn’t mean that they can see the world. If your teen is desperate to get out there and see what the planet has to offer, these age-appropriate ideas could be a good compromise.
Register them to take part in a foreign exchange
Is your teenager studying a foreign language at school? If so, then perhaps you should consider registering them to take part in their school’s foreign exchange program. If your teen is desperate to get out there and see the world, a foreign exchange program is the perfect way for them to do that safely. They spend two weeks living with another family abroad, learning about a different culture. Then, a few weeks later, their foreign friend comes and spends two weeks living with your family. Although they’ll only get to see one country, taking part in a foreign exchange will give them a sense of freedom and allow them to feel independent.
Encourage them to take part in a mission trip
A great way to allow your child to get out there and see the world is to encourage them to take part in a mission trip. There are plenty of summer teen service trip ideas to choose from, from building houses to working in orphanages, there are lots of options. It’s just a case of helping your child to decide which type of mission trip would be most beneficial for them. Being away from home for an extended period of time could be just what they need to get that sense of freedom that they crave.
Allow them to study abroad for a semester
If your teen’s school runs a semester-long exchange program, consider allowing them to study abroad for a semester. You may not like the idea of them living abroad for such a long period of time. However, if it will allow them to see more of the world and learn about independence, it’s worth considering. Obviously, it’s not a decision to rush into, but it could be one of the best things that your teenager ever does.
A lot of teenagers are desperate to get out there and see the world. Of course, until they complete their school careers, they can’t go anywhere for a long period of time. Unless it’s a trip that’s approved by their school, that is. The ideas above are ideal for teens that want to get out there and see the world. So they’re worth taking the time to consider.
