40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood Devotions and Coloring Book by Sarah Humphrey @SHumpdee #Motherhood

I have really been enjoying the adult coloring books that have become so popular lately! I thought it was silly at first but then one day my daughter asked me to color with her. Instead of coloring Barbie I decided to use an adult coloring book and have been hooked ever since! It’s just so relaxing and also a wonderful way to spend time with my children. We usually chat while coloring and it’s become a great bonding time with my daughter.

While all the other books I’ve done have been “just” a coloring book, 40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is the first that’s also a devotional! What a perfect combination! I love that after I read the devotional, I can continue my quiet time with coloring! It’s such a great way to apply what I just read and continue to think about it as I draw. This is such a brilliant idea!

I like the smooth finish of the cover that makes it a treat to the fingertips to even hold and touch. It kind of puts me in the mindset of softening my heart and spirit for what I’m about to learn. The pages themselves are on the thin side. Because the drawings have the devotions on the other side of them, you can’t use marker or it’ll bleed through so it limits you to colored pencils or crayons. That really is the only downside though and I personally prefer the colored pencils so it works well for me.

I like that the drawings are on the fairly simple side. Some of these books can get so complex and intricate with their drawings it’s hard for me to finish them. It also helps drive home the message itself. For example, coloring hearts over and over again really makes you focus on love.

The devotionals are truly wonderful and I like that the focus is on them with the drawings as a bonus instead of the other way around. Humphrey writes in a way that is both simple to understand yet complex enough to get you really thinking. She is warm and relatable and makes you feel like old friends.

40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood is truly a joy to read and color and an inspiration that soothes and calms my heart.

About the Book

40 Days to a Joyful Motherhood: Devotions and Coloring Book to Nourish Mom (Abingdon Press, August 2016)

Nourishment for a mother’s soul through 40 days of devotion and . . . doodling!

Wouldn’t it be marvelous if mothering came with a concrete set of instructions—an easy recipe we could follow? Instead, motherhood challenges women to find their faith, their true selves, and their family through daily doses of trial and error. It is a brilliant and healing time of life that is full of joy, pain, and beauty with a small side of crisis (and humor). What mothers do not know, they learn. And through this lifelong process of learning, they nurture and care for the most precious gifts on earth: children. In a modern society where moms often have a full and busy plate, these 10 minute daily devotions focus on six key topics of motherhood:

-Self-acceptance
-Self-care
-Reconciling with grief, hope and expectations
-Generosity
-Presence
-Forgiveness

In addition to the devotions, these beautiful pages are adorned with handmade illustrations to help you refresh from long days or even occasional sleepless nights. So, grab your colors and a little quiet time for yourself while doodling at the kitchen table. You will be grateful you did!
