Reading books to my kids before going to sleep has always been a part of our bedtime routine. I especially enjoy reading them books about going to bed like Time for Bed, Sleepyhead because it sets the tone and mindset that it’s time to go to bed! It always helps kids to know this is normal and everyone has to go to bed, even when they don’t want to. After all, what better book to read than The Falling Asleep Book!
This is probably the most interesting book I’ve read for getting kids to sleep because of the psychology behind it. It is actually written by a adolescent psychiatrist so there’s a lot more behind it than just another book about bedtime.
Like many children, the Little Bear does not want to go sleep! Mama Bear explains how important sleep is for the mind and body. She tells Little Bear a story that is a whole story within this story. In the story friends enjoy a day at the beach, then they go through their own bedtime routine of dinner and taking a bath.
The story is almost hypnotic and filled with subtle messages about sleep that will make them feel sleepy.
You are all so tired as you get ready for bed (yawn here), even your toothbrushes feel heavy.
Talking about being sleepy and yawning and acting sleepy will naturally turn little ones thoughts towards rest. The first time I read this book my older kids actually asked me questions about if it was true that the brain needed rest for their growth and development. While I’ve said this to them before, hearing it in different terms from another source besides mom made them really think about why they need sleep.
The constant talk of sleep and getting tired in the book really gets them ready to go to sleep. I think it actually makes them WANT to go to sleep! In fact it can have the same effect on me while reading it! It’s such a soothing, relaxing read that by the time you are at the end of Time for Bed, Sleepyhead, everyone is ready for a good nights sleep!
