Next Stop…Mars: Journey to Space #Review & #Giveaway #JourneytoSpace

My eight year old son Reed studied space towards the end of his second grade school year and has been obsessed with all things space ever since! He reads every book he can get his hands on and watches movies about it. We look things up online and make sure not to miss certain events like the recent strawberry moon we witnessed. I knew when I saw Next Stop….Mars: Journey to Space that he would love it!

It was extremely popular in IMAX theaters because of the incredible footage. Since we missed it in theaters, the blu-ray with special features is the next best thing! Even better, Reed can watch it anytime he wants, and he does!

The opening images are incredible and make you feel like you are traveling in space so I can only imagine what the IMAX experience is like! There is a lot of great information in this DVD about the history of space travel as well as future plans for traveling to Mars. My son is especially fascinated by this idea and was glued to the screen.

It also briefly covers the shuttle disasters that are the sad part of NASA history. I remember well both of them. The Challenger explosion I was just ten years old but we were allowed to watch it because I lived in New Hampshire at the time and we were so proud of New Hampshire teacher Christa McAuliffe for her role in the mission. I talked to my kids about this briefly and it made them sad but they understand that this is a risk that Astronauts knowingly take.

There is a lot of information about astronauts and space travel that had never even occurred to me. For example, how Doctors help them prepare for medical issues that can occur on long space journeys. The journey to Mars will tax six months EACH WAY making it a two year mission. A lot of sickness and health issues could arise in that amount of time so they have to try to prepare as best they can.

There are also a lot of facts I never knew like how much muscle mass they lose and that they have to exercise two hours a day to combat this!

Next Stop…Mars: Journey to Space is filled with facts, information, history and beautiful footage of space that will take your breath away! I have three copies to give away to three lucky winners below!

About the DVD

Brilliantly narrated by film and television legend Sir Patrick Stewart, Journey To Space gives a sweeping overview of humanity’s accomplishments in space, as well as our ongoing activities and future plans.
Journey To Space puts into historical context the magnificent contributions made by the Space Shuttle program and its intrepid space pioneers. It uses the most spectacular space footage (including unique views of Earth and operations in space) such as deploying and repairing the Hubble Space Telescope. It then goes on to show how the shuttle launched and assembled the International Space Station (ISS). Together, these programs have taught us how to live, build and conduct scientific experiments in space. The ISS will continue operating in space until 2024, and the film shows how it is building a foundation for the next giant leaps into space, concluding with a fascinating, realistic scenario of how astronauts will actually get to Mars, live there for long durations, and then return home after a two-and-a-half-year mission.
