Two is such a fun age for learning! Jax is at that age of discovery where he’s excited to learn and wants to repeat and share everything he knows! Right now he’s learning colors and shapes and so he has to point out the color and shape of every single thing he sees! The Hot Dots® Tots Colors & Shapes Interactive Board Book Set is a great way for Jax to perfect his learning and have fun at the same time!
The set comes with two books and Elliot the bear. Elliot is a musical pen like bear who brings a whole new level of fun to learning!
There are several different sets available with focus on different things and even sets designed specifically for older kids. This particular set comes with A day at the Park and Rainbow Salad. Jax’s favorite is rainbow salad because he’s really more into colors than shapes at this point.
I was surprised to find that A Day in the Park starts with “Finn and his mommies stroll to the park.” I understand we live in a very liberal world different from the one I grew up in. However, I don’t want to have this conversation with my toddler because he will not understand it at all. Even my older kids at 6 and 8 have not been exposed to this yet. Some will probably feel it’s a sign of the times and we may as well get used to it. I, however, am putting this book away because I want to talk to my kids about it in my own time when I feel they are ready. I do think there should be some kind of warning on it for parents who feel the same.
Elliot takes 2 AAA batteries (not included) to get him working. This is one of the harder things I’ve tried to get batteries into. The screw on top of his head is super small and a bit temperamental to turn, even with the right size screw driver. You have to be really careful not to strip the screw while getting the batteries in. Once in, he works like a charm.
Each page has a statement about what is happening in the picture and then asks a question relating to color. It gives only two options to increase their chances of getting it right! If they place Elliot on the wrong answer, nothing happens. If they place it on the correct one they are rewarded with his music and lights that lets them know they have chosen correctly! I like that it only responds when correct so it doesn’t confuse toddlers. It’s obvious when they are right or wrong.
The board books are designed well and are built to last. Jax loves going through both of them and can be entertained for long periods of time by it. Sometimes he even does it on his own just to make Elliot light up, even though I’m not reading it to him.
A major bummer is that Elliot’s not interactive between other sets. This seems such a waste if you have multiple sets and a separate bear for each. You also have to make sure not to get them mixed up since they only work with the set they came with.
Other than that, both Jax and I are thrilled with the Hot Dots® Tots Colors & Shapes Interactive Board Book Set!
