This book about the story of Bronner absolutely captivated me and stole my heart! The timing was really ironic since I had just followed a very similar story when two year old Noah Chamberlin was found dead. While they both died in different tragic accidents, the faith of their parents is so similar it’s astounding to me. I would like to think I would respond in the same way but I honestly don’t think I could or would.

Both children and their parents have really made me examine my faith as of late. Because of Noah I was already processing a lot of emotions and reading Bronner: a Journey to Understand right after Noah was found, really compounded it all and helped me to understand a few things.

Bronner was a sweet two year old little boy when he drowned in the family pool. His mother found him and the immediate response of both parents was prayer. While God didn’t answer in the way that they would have chosen, he did in fact answer. This is something I really struggle with as a Christian and especially as the mother of a two year old little boy. I think stories like this that could have just as easily been my little boy really shake me to the core. They have the ability to impact me like no other.

Reading about the faith of his parents and the way his dad witnessed to the world by speaking at his funeral is simply inspiring. If these people can praise God in the midst of a parents worst nightmare, what excuse do the rest of us have?

I cried while I read this book, feeling the mother’s heartbreak through her words. Burgess is a profound writer and her words have an extreme depth to them that only someone who has experienced grief can fully comprehend. I’m not saying others can’t understand it but you really relate to things differently after you have lost someone. My dad died less then six months ago and while it’s not as tragic as a life cut short so young, it’s still a huge loss and a time of grieving. I have come to understand people better who have experienced loss and I really connected with Burgess in this story. While our losses were very different, grief is a path everyone must walk at some point.

We all ask why when things like this happen. The faith of the Burgess family stood strong through their sorrow and they grew even deeper in their love of the Lord and had an even stronger testimony to share. While no one would choose this; they really came through it stronger on the other side.

Bronner: A Journey to Understand helped ME to understand a little better my own faith and why God allows bad things to happen to good people.
