I loved this book! I was really surprised to see the age recommendation for The Red Hat was 3 – 5. I thought for sure it’d say 30 – 40 because I enjoyed it so much! It kind of reminded me of the Disney Short Film Paperman!
Like the film there is a man trying to reach a woman. There are even things that get blown away! Billy Hightower lives in a tall building by himself with the wind! I love that the wind is shown through the pages in a shimmery raised image. It gives the illustrations and the story itself a certain whimsy where you almost feel and hear the wind blow!
He spots a woman one day that he would like to meet across the way in another tall building who wears a red hat. The day her hat blows away is the day he has the opportunity to chase the red hat and meet her! His quest isn’t easy like most things in life but worth it in the end.
I was really captivated by this book for some reason. I read it to my kids and while they were interested enough to sit through, I felt like it really was more interesting for adults! Or maybe it’s just me!
Either way, we love Disney books in our house and if you need to still get some gifts, The Red Hat is wonderful for young and old alike!
About the Book
Billy Hightower spends his whole life alone in a skyscraper high above a big city. Then one day, a skyscraper is built next door and a girl moves in. Could she be a friend? But every time Billy tries to reach out to her, the wily Wind gets in his way! Can Billy find a way to outsmart the Wind and make a new friend, or will he be swept away?
