Don’t Tell him he’s Learning! @vtechtoys #vtechtoys #HolidayGiftGuide

The watch has been provided by VTech so I could experience it with my family; however, the thoughts and opinions are all my own.IMG_1111

My seven year old son is suddenly into all things technical and mechanical. His Christmas wish list went from things like action figures and games to iPads and watches. He is much more technically inclined then I and that’s just how his brain works.

He got the original VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch last year and loved it. He figured lost everything out all on his own and it kept him entertained. When he saw there was a new and improved version with the VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX just had to have it.

It came while he was at school so I got to play with it first! Shhhh There are things about the old version that we liked that carried over to this version which makes sense. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! One of those things is the ability to charge through a USB port hooked up to a computer. This is the best way to charge in my opinion plus the cord is two fold if you want to transfer the pictures and video or download additional games and apps.

It’s fun for kids to have the ability to take their own pictures and video. When Reed got the first version he was into the games so I was surprised this time around a year later how much he was into taking pictures and videos. It was full of them when I just took a look at the watch to see how some features worked. I was surprised by how clear the pictures and videos were. It doesn’t even look like they were done on a watch designed for kids.

Like the first version, it also has a nice big face which makes it easy to see the screen. The band is a comfortable rubber which easily adjusts for fit. The face seems almost too big to me for a watch but since it does so many things it makes sense. With the popularity of the Apple Watch I also think that big is more “in” then it used to be.

There are again two main buttons and a touch screen to maneuver around. There’s the home button on one side and the camera button on the other.

There are four screens they can swipe between with four things on each screen for a total of sixteen! In addition to the camera and voice recorder options there are fun games, tools like a calculator, calendar and timer and even a pedometer! I thought this was the best upgrade to the newer version. If you make it a fun game for kids on something like their own watch, they are more likely to be into being active and making it a game.

In the same way the racing run makes running a game and a challenge and Reed keeps trying to beat his own record. What a great way to get in shape!

Another of my personal favorites is the timer! Reed has required reading every night and I used to have to time him. Suddenly since he had the capability to do it himself, there is no more whining about it! It’s like giving him the power to do it himself totally changed his attitude about it.

This VTech Kidizoom Smartwatch DX has been wonderful for Reed in so many ways. I thought the first version was great but this one is even better! This would make an incredible gift for the kids on your list this year! Educational, functional AND fun!
