We all know someone who has been affected by breast cancer whether directly or indirectly. One in four is a huge, staggering statistic that drives fear into the heart of women. I’m lucky that I haven’t lost anyone close to me to breast cancer but I do have my own story that I haven’t shared before.
At the beginning of this year I found a lump in my right breast. It’s a moment I’ll never forget. The instant fear is indescribable. I felt like all the blood drained out of my body in that moment and my life literally flashed before my eyes. More accurately; my children lives! I thought of them growing up without a mom. You can’t help but think worst case scenario because all too often, it is.
It’s amazing to me that “I found a lump” isn’t a same day appointment! We hear all about early detection but how often does health care cooperate with that? Yes I found it early but unfortunately my Doctor couldn’t get me in for three weeks. It was three weeks of stress, anxiety and fear. Once I finally got in to see her it was another two weeks before they could do an ultrasound and another two before I got the results. That’s almost two months lost if it had been worst case scenario.
My Doctor did tell me she didn’t think it was cancer but I’ll never forget her words: “I’m not going to be the Doctor that missed cancer.” When I got the results of the Ultrasound they said it was benign. What they didn’t say is what it actually was. It’s not a tumor so what is it? Initially she thought maybe a clogged milk duct since I finished breastfeeding my son a few months before. Now it’s been a year since I stopped breastfeeding so that possibility went out the window. It’s still there and I still don’t have an answer.
I turn forty in February and will go in for my first mammogram. I think there will always be fear and stress relating to this until it either goes away or someone tells me what it is.
This month now has more personal meaning to me. I wear this rose quartz faceted broiler pendant in honor of all the women who have battled breast cancer and all those that will face it in the future. I hope I’m not among that number but if I’ve learned nothing else it’s that nothing is guaranteed. Life is sacred and should be treated as such. This necklace is a subtle reminder of that.
That is why I feel like months like these are important. It’s important to bring awareness and also to remember and honor those that have lost the battle against breast cancer.
Mocoloco Studio gives twenty percent of their proceeds from the sale of these necklaces to breast cancer b4bc or boarding for breast cancer. Their motto is one I love: Early Detection + Active Lifestyle = Best Prevention.
I think this makes a wonderful gift for the women in your life. Not only does it represent something beautiful; it also gives to an amazing cause. It doesn’t hurt that it’s also beautifully and well made.
I love the unique chain that is unlike any I’ve seen before. The color is soft and beautiful and blends into my skin so that the focus is on the stone itself and not just the chain. The other thing I really like is that it’s actually attached to the rose quartz so it doesn’t move. No more turning the necklace around when the attachment ends up in the front. It really makes it such a special piece. You can read more about Rose Quart below to see why it’s the perfect choice of stone for breast cancer awareness.
My hope is that someday a cure is found but for now the best we can do is keep awareness high and stay active and take care of ourselves to help prevent becoming a statistic.
