Before getting this book I hadn’t really thought yet about teaching my kids The Lord’s Prayer. They are seven, six and one and it always seemed like something for when they got older. I think part of it was intimidation in teaching them something so deep and part of it was just not knowing how. Catherine DeVries helps out with both in her new book Let’s Learn about the Lord’s Prayer with artwork by Ryan Jackson.
I immediately adored the illustrations and could see why Ryan Jackson is quickly growing in popularity. They just have that classic feel from hen I was young but still appeal to kids now and today.
The second thing that jumped out at me was the amount of questions that were asked. I almost auto pilot read them without noticing until my six year old daughter answered the first question outloud. Then I noticed how many questions there were which are great for reading, especially if you want to know your child is paying attention and processing. When my free spirited daughter that tends to daydream and space out a lot answered questions, I knew this was a good thing.
I think it also helped that the star of the book was a little girl named Emma who talks about a playdate. A playdate is Paige’s favorite thing of all time, being the social girl that she is so it’s something she immediately connected with.
We learn a little bit about Emma and she wants to learn a little bit about you! Then she gets to the heart of the matter: The Lord’s Prayer.
Emma explains a little bit about it and then proceeds to teach it. She continues to explain each line after she states it. This is a great help to parents everywhere! My children always ask these types of questions so they are answered here right up front!
As I read this to my kids the first time I realized they are really never too young to learn it and I should have taught it to them a long time ago. Well, problem solved and mission accomplished. The book concludes with going through The Lord’s Prayer one more time, uninterrupted.
We all enjoyed Let’s Learn about the Lord’s Prayer from the littlest to the oldest in my house. Even the one year old could enjoy the experience because it was a board book with nice thick pages he was allowed to turn.
I am really looking forward to seeing what’s next in the HeartSmart series; designed to teach preschoolers to teach little ones God’s word.
About the Book
Litfuse, David C. Cook, and Catherine DeVries invite readers to join Emma on a playdate. In Let’s Learn About the Lord’s Prayer, readers will learn with Emma about the Lord’s prayer during snack time and help Emma “teach it” to Blueberry, Emma’s favorite teddy bear, by practicing it through a simple song.
Let’s Learn About the Lord’s Prayer features artwork from up-and-coming artist Ryan Jackson.
In this first book of the HeartSmart series, preschoolers are invited on a playdate with Emma. Together they learn the Lord’s Prayer and practice “teaching” it to Emma’s favorite teddy bear. HeartSmart is a Scripture memory series designed to create opportunities for children to fill their heart with God’s Word. HeartSmart combines key Scriptures with songs, giving parents a spiritual formation path for building a strong foundation of faith. The entire Lord’s Prayer is included, along with a custom song (free download with access code).
