Finding Work After Fashion School: Set Yourself Up for Success

If you are getting ready to graduate from fashion school, or if you are new in the workforce with fashion experience, you are probably looking for work. There are a number of ways that you can use your fashion school experience, and since the fashion world is multi-faceted and broad, there are a myriad of job opportunities, some of which you may not think of at first. To ensure that you have a great chance to find success, there are a couple of things that you should do:

Have an Outstanding Portfolio

No matter what you are interested in when looking at the fashion world, an outstanding portfolio is imperative. This portfolio should only contain your finest work, and you should not be afraid to ask for help. Reaching out to some of your instructors, or even asking people who currently work in your desired field for help can be the difference between finding a job in fashion and settling for something else. Your portfolio is often a first impression, and if a hiring manager isn’t impressed after glancing at your work, you probably will not get very far in the hiring process.

Start Networking

You have probably heard that it is easier to find a job when you know someone, and the fashion world is no exception. Since fashion is such a broad industry, however, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to network only with those in the fashion world. Take some time to meet other people, too. There are many ways to do this, and some include joining meetup groups, taking advantage of alumni associations, attending local festivals or events and contacting those you may have worked with in the past. Make sure you tell everyone you meet what you are looking for and ask them to let you know if they hear of any opportunities.

Think Outside of the Box

If you have a degree in fashion, that doesn’t necessarily mean you should only be looking at fashion companies. There are a number of skills that go into a fashion degree, and these skills can be useful in other industries, as well. For instance, Charles Phillips Infor is one company that does this. Though this is a software company, the company leadership often hire people in other fields, such as fashion, as they know these people think and act in different ways than those who typically study software.

Don’t Give Up

Finally, it is important not to give up when looking for a job in fashion. If you need to find employment, try to find a job in any field, but still don’t give up on your fashion dreams. Even if you have to take a part-time job at a coffee shop, you will still be getting work experience and making money. While working this temporary job, keep looking for a job in fashion. As soon as you find your dream job, you can put in your notice and start on the path to success in the fashion field.
