The Speaker has Become the Listener #Dad #Poems #MarkSchipul

The man who loved to talk
has been silenced by disease
The loss of your voice
is the grandest irony

It may have seemed I wasn’t listening
but I heard you
While you loved to speak
I relish in silence

I didn’t always respond
but I always heard
Now you no longer need your voice
because all the words have been spoken

I feel your understanding
in the gentleness of your smile
in the tears you sometimes shed
in the eyes now mostly vacant

I know those too will fade
as your body follows your voice
Until you are once again made whole
and enter your eternal home

The speaker has become the listener
but your words will live on
In the lives of your children
in the hearts that you touched

the sick
the lonely
the wounded
the broken
the discouraged
the disheartened

The man who spoke for many
hasn’t a voice to speak
But your legacy will live on
in the voices that still can
