I participated in the Joy WIlliams Venus album review program as a member of One2One Network. I was provided an album to review but all opinions are my own.
Taking the plunge and becoming a solo artist after having success as a duo is a big leap of faith and Joy Williams has taken the jump! After experiencing success as The Civil Wars; a folk duo; Joy Williams has branched off on her own. Her debut album Venus is available June 30th and after getting a sneak peak, I’m sure it will be a smashing success!
Her sound is so unique and her voice has a beautiful, almost haunting sound to it. It drew me right in with the first track Before I Sleep. I think the first track is so important because it really sets the tone for the entire album and this was the perfect choice.
I have so much respect for artists that write their own music because when it comes from their heart and soul there is a depth to it that you don’t hear with all music. She based this album on her own life the past two and a half years since her split from The Civil Wars. Life changes often have the most material for inspiration and this is evident in her lyrics. Listening to the words and knowing it is based on her own life made me want to know more about her and to hear more!
My favorite song is One Day I Will. I get chills every time I listen to it. I like how the piano is soft and subtle in the background leaving her voice at the forefront. This song sounds to me like she’s analyzing her decision to branch out on her own OR another kind of a breakup. While we all have our own lives and situations, this song could relate to so many of them. We have all let go of something, left it in the past and moved on whether it be a relationship, a job or other circumstance. I find her raw, open honesty so refreshing and relatable.
This was my first experience listening to Joy Williams music and I am a fan! She has a depth and a beauty to her voice that you don’t hear every day. Listening to Venus makes me feel happy, sad and encouraged all at the same time.
