Staying active is important to me for a healthy lifestyle. Not only do I want to maintain a healthy weight; I also want to be around for a long time! Heart health is important to me. One thing I really enjoy doing is walking. I have a couple friends that I walk with after we drop our kids off at school. We do either a 2 or a 4 mile route depending on the time we have for the day. It doesn’t have to be a crazy, long, vigorous workout, as long as we are out there doing it!
I am participating in the 2015 Vioinc Walkabout Challenge to walk 30 minutes a day for 30 days. If you participate and Hashtag #VionicWalkabout you could be eligible to win some awesome prizes!
If comfortable shoes and aching feet are a problem for you, Vionic has some super comfortable footwear! I’ll be reviewing a pair in the coming weeks but in the meantime, here is all the info you need to join the challenge yourself! Happy trails!

Vionic’s annual Walkabout challenge starts February 1st, 2015 (National Heart Health Month). The Walkabout encourages people to live a healthy lifestyle by walking everyday for 30 days (for as little as 30 minutes). The initiative is co-promoted by Vionic spokespeople Dr. Andrew Weil and celebrity trainer Juliet Kaska.
The Walkabout campaign is open to the public to serve as champions of walking, putting a spotlight on walking and taking steps toward a personal commitment to a healthy lifestyle at the start of the new year. The campaign is also an opportunity to engage in an online community of walkers, encouraging anyone and everyone to get out and walk for wellbeing. Anyone can participate in the Vionic Walkabout simply by signing up. Participants will receive Vionic’s “Get Active” guide with fitness tips to optimize your Walkabout experience. “Walking can become almost equal to jogging in terms of getting your heart rate pumping for a healthy cardiovascular workout,” says Dr. Andrew Weil, noted integrative medicine expert. “It is probably the safest [exercise] option of all, with the least chance of injury.”
This year, Vionic is partnering with SparkPeople, an online platform that helps users to reach their goals and lead healthier lives through free nutrition and fitness tools, expert created content and a vibrant, supportive community. SparkPeople has about 15.5 million lifetime members, many of whom lost weight and achieved better fitness through walking. Sparkpeople will host the Vionic Walkabout challenge through the month of April, at which point, users will be given the option to extend their SparkPeople memberships and continue on the journey to realizing their health and fitness goals.
What Participants receive/can win:
Participants receive exclusive daily emails with motivation and healthy living info including recipes and wisdom from Dr. Weil and fitness moves from celebrity trainer Juliet Kaska. Also a a 3-month free subscription to Dr. Weil’s Spontaneous Happiness and Vionic’s Guide to Getting Active: Tips from the Experts.
There is also a walk to win aspect – daily prizes include shoes, cookbooks and more and the grand price is a trip to Napa Valley! The grand prize is based on social media participation.
“Walking is what your body is designed to do. It strengthens almost every major organ in the body, promotes bone density, and boosts the immune system,” says Dr. Weil. “There’s no special skill, training or equipment needed, just the right footwear.”
Research shows that walking as little as 30 minutes a day can lower the risk of heart disease (America’s Number 1 killer) by as much as 40 percent. By even taking two or three 10-15 minute walks per day, people can improve blood pressure, reduce the risk of diabetes and improve mental wellbeing.
Celebrity trainer and fitness expert Juliet Kaska strongly recommends walking as a way to get and stay fit for even beginning exercisers: “Walking is an easy, stress-free exercise, clearing your mind, ?strengthening your heart and toning muscles.”
According to a study by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), 72 percent of Americans say they do not exercise because foot pain prevents them from doing so. This astounding figure emphasizes the importance of getting started with a pair walking-friendly shoes or sandals that are breathable, offer good arch support, are relatively lightweight and have flexible soles to allow the front of the foot to flex comfortably.
Vionic Footwear with Orthaheel Technology offers footwear that helps prevent and alleviate foot pain and fits a variety of lifestyles. Vionic shoes feature a removable orthotic footbed that supports feet and helps realign the lower-legs, improving posture and balance – an ideal option for daily fitness walking.
