Getting on the Right Track in the New Year

veryone makes resolutions when the new year arrives. They usually reach for goals that are simply too unreasonable, bound for failure from the start. From extreme fitness regimens to starvation diets, they can’t be maintained for the duration. Instead of aiming for something beyond your reach, make this the year that you dedicate to taking better care of yourself. Your body is your temple. Give it the tender, loving care it deserves and you’ll reap the benefits. Take the following advice to get yourself started on a path to better health and well-being.

Get Your Beauty Sleep
You need a good night’s rest on a regular basis. It’s more than an indulgence. It’s a necessity as your body recharges after a long day. This is the best way to allow your cells to achieve damage control, to maintain a healthy metabolism, and increase energy levels during the day. If you haven’t established a solid sleep routine, now is the time to start.

Stay Hydrated
The importance of drinking plenty of water can’t be emphasized enough. Shoot for at least eight ounces a day. Make it your go-to drink. It will keep all of your systems working at optimal levels as toxins are flushed from your body. Drink water before meals and you can curb your appetite. Substitute it for soda or other sugary drinks and you’ll lose weight without even trying. You’ll feel refreshed without adding calories to your diet.

Eat Well
You don’t have to starve to reach your goal weight. You simply need to make logical choices about what you put into your body. Think moderation when it comes to processed foods, snacks, and sweets. Make sure that you have an abundance of fresh produce in your diet. Low fat dairy products, such as yogurt, are beneficial as a source of protein and calcium. Include healthy fats with omega-3 fatty acids, such as nuts and fish. Practice portion control and try eating several small meals a day, instead of three, large meals. You’ll find yourself looking and feeling better without denying yourself the foods that you love.

Get Active
You do not have to run a marathon to be physically fit. Go for a walk every day. Park far away from the office and take the stairs. Pop in an exercise DVD or take a bike ride. Find something that you enjoy when you want to be active. If you can find someone to join you, that will help you to remain motivated. Your body will thank you.
