How to Utilize all that Leftover Wrapping Paper! #ChristmasTraditions

My Thoughts

Is there anything worse to store than wrapping paper? A few years ago I bought one of those bins but it’s only good for the normal sized wrapping paper and I buy the super sized big rolls that don’t fit! They usually end up on the bottom of my linen closet, completely flattened and torn by the end of the year.

I can’t bear to throw away perfectly good paper even though I know it’ll probably end up in the trash eventually! This year as I was putting away my Christmas decorations I had a brilliant idea!

A few years ago I saw a tradition on Pinterest that I loved and started doing with my kids. I took 24 Christmas books and wrapped them up and then each night in December leading up to Christmas, the kids would get to open one up before bedtime and we’d read it together.

I think the opening of the gift, even though it’s a book they already had, just helps curb the anticipation of having to wait until Christmas to open presents! Even though we’ve done this for a few years now and have read all the books, my kids STILL get excited to open it!

It’s always a cherished time together to read the story and it’s even more precious now that Reed can read to his younger siblings.

As I was cleaning up yesterday and packing away the books for next year, I looked at the stack of books next to the piles of wrapping paper and decided to wrap them NOW! I took all my leftover paper that will either go to waste OR be used to wrap these very same books next year and wrapped them up!

I packed them away already wrapped, tossed the rolls and checked one thing off my list for next year!

I love it when a plan comes together! No more waste and one less thing to do next year! Double win!

  1. These are great ideas. We don’t wrap gifts that come from Santa but for those that do, awesome tips!

  2. What a fun idea! We always have bits and pieces left over!

  3. What a wonderful idea! Now I’m kicking myself, I’ve lots of books ready for next year.

  4. What a great idea!!

  5. Anything you can do now is one thing you will LOVE yourself for later! I actually have so much paper I haven’t bought any in 3 years!

  6. Great tips for using up extra paper. Like you, I hate the thought of throwing out perfectly good paper, and I love being able to recycle and repurpose it if I can! Thanks for sharing!

  7. Cool idea. Lots of fun also.

  8. I really like that idea! It’s so cute. I usually buy wrapping paper that can be used all year round in bright colors like green and blue! That way if anything is left over, it will get used.

  9. That is a cute idea for the leftover paper. It is also a good idea to wrap the books now and have one less thing to do next season.

  10. What a cool idea for a Christmas tradition! I usually have some left over paper!

  11. OMG what a fabulous idea. Wonder how this could work for a teenager.

  12. What a sweet idea, I am the one with the extra rolls of wrapping paper shoved in a bag and flatted on the floor. What a brilliant idea!

  13. I just use an oversized shopping bag to store my paper. I love the book idea, but my kids have grown 🙁 too soon!

  14. I’ve got those same leftover rolls of wrapping paper in my vacuum closet just getting destroyed! Love the idea of wrapping up a book for the 24 days of Christmas!

  15. You are one smart mama! Anything that makes the busy Christmas season a bit easier is a keeper.

That is a great idea. I have a storage tub that is big enough to store mine, so I am covered 🙂
