My Thoughts

I have two early readers in my house so I was curious to see how a Bible designed just for them would be different from others. The Early Readers Bible, New King James Version was created for ages 7 to 10. My kids are 5 and 6 but they are almost there! Reed is basically reading in first grade and Paige is just starting in Kindergarten.

The Bible itself is still the straight New Kings James Version, just in large print for those new readers. The real difference is the added things like maps and charts as well as the Bible Timeline and Illustrated word list.

My personal favorite section is ‘The Bible Teaches us How to Build Christian Character the Proverbs Way.’ It has topics that kids this age deal with like improper talk and lying and gives them the verses relating to these subjects. I like that it’s geared towards the little ones and what they will struggle with in these early years. Their problems might seem small to us but they are big to them and it’s important to teach them how to search the Word when the problems are small so that they know where to go when they are big.

My son has a newfound interest in geography so he was really into the maps. I like that they usually had a  picture with them, some verses and explanations. They weren’t just maps. They were put into context. Since Reed is really a visual learner this was of great help to him.

He also liked the Biblical timeline and so did I! Whenever teaching my kids, I always learn something new. There are things I know in general but this is very specific and as I was going through it with Reed, I got really into the timeline! I did some of my own research when he was done.

I’m really impressed with The Early Readers Bible! The NKJV isn’t my favorite but I think it’s important to expose kids to all versions and interpretations so they can put it all together in their heads and get unique perspectives. This would make a great Christmas present for the early readers in your life!
