I Will Go

Every day you slip further away
The light of recognition in your eyes is fading
Replaced by confusion and emptiness
Are you still in there?
How much do you understand?
I no longer feel your joy
I no longer feel your sorrow
Do you feel anything at all?

The man before me is a shell of the man I knew
But how empty is the shell?
We will never know

And so I will go
I will sit and talk
I will make jokes and laugh
You listen but do you hear?
Do you care that I am here?
It doesn’t matter
I love you enough for both of us

And so I will go
I will hold your hand and show you pictures of your life
Pictures of our life
Pictures of the man you were
Pictures of the life you had

Maybe I will get a smile
Maybe a look will pass between us
Maybe you will kiss my forehead and I will know

The love is still there
It can not be buried
It can not be forgotten
It will never be lost
It can not be taken

And so I will go
To the place I hate
With the smells we don’t speak of
With the sounds that haunt my dreams
To the man I knew
To the Dad I love
I will go
