Meet Hollis Hughes:

On a cold February day in 1928, Hollis Hughes was born in a ramshackle house with no insulation, plumbing, or electricity. Growing up on a farm during the Great Depression, Hollis spent his youth chopping wood, tending the family farm, milking cows, and tending to livestock. Following college graduation, Hollis worked as a high school teacher and counselor for 38 years, and operated a successful rhododendron nursery.

When Hollis’ wife developed Alzheimer’s disease in 1988, he spent the next twelve years taking care of her. Today, Hollis is retired from education. He is a fly fisherman, hiker, and gardener. He is a member of the American Camellia Society, and a lifetime member of the Birmingham Botanical Society. Hollis and his wife, Lera, make their home in Alabama.

My Thoughts

Scarce is the book that’s unpredictable and leaves me guessing until the very end! “Mindful of Him” was one of those rare treats that don’t come along very often. I found myself completely engrossed in this book and treasured the unique story that was unlike anything I’ve ever read before. How refreshing to read a distinctive plot!Hughes takes us on a journey of Spiritual enlightenment with Rob who has experienced more tragedy in the past year of his life than many do in a lifetime. The river he grew up beside has always called to him. From childhood he longed to find its source but never thought he’d have the opportunity. When misfortune leaves him in the uncommon position of not having any ties to a home or commitments, he leaves on an adventure he’s waited a lifetime to experience that will forever change him.We travel with Rob along the river, camping at different beautiful locations and encountering several men whom he has instant friendships with and life-changing conversations. Hughes’s characters have a depth to them unlike any I’ve come across. Each man that Rob spent time with almost could have been a whole book in itself because their stories were equally intriguing in their own right. Each time he moved on from one, it felt like I was losing a friend and I would miss their character in the story, until another came along!

While Rob physically seeks the spring that gave the river life, he spiritually seeks the one that gave us all life. He questions if there even is a God and struggles with his doubt and trying to understand how his life could have taken such a horrific turn in a short period of time. He battles this inner turmoil along the way and lies awake at night torturing himself with his thoughts. He dreams of his wife Beth and feels her presence with him, while miles away she’s feeling the exact same thing because of their connection.

Does Rob find the peace he seeks? Is there resolution in his life for the two most important relationships he struggles with; God and his wife Beth? It’s an amazing journey you will be thrilled to take with Rob to discover the answers. You will cry with him and cheer at his triumphs along the way.

This is truly a remarkable novel that my words cannot possibly do justice for. Hughes writes with a depth that displays life experience and a familiarity with pain and tragedy that enables him to breathe life into several one of a kind characters. Anyone who has ever struggled with doubt, pain or loss will relate to this story and find comfort in its pages.
