The Rook: A Novel by Daniel O’Malley

“The body you are wearing used to be mine.” So begins the letter Myfanwy Thomas is holding when she awakes in a London park surrounded by bodies all wearing latex gloves. With no recollection of who she is, Myfanwy must follow the instructions her former self left behind to discover her identity and track down the agents who want to destroy her.

She soon learns that she is a Rook, a high-ranking member of a secret organization called the Chequy that battles the many supernatural forces at work in Britain. She also discovers that she possesses a rare, potentially deadly supernatural ability of her own.

In her quest to uncover which member of the Chequy betrayed her and why, Myfanwy encounters a person with four bodies, an aristocratic woman who can enter her dreams, a secret training facility where children are transformed into deadly fighters, and a conspiracy more vast than she ever could have imagined.

Filled with characters both fascinating and fantastical, THE ROOK is a richly inventive, suspenseful, and often wry thriller that marks an ambitious debut from a promising young writer.

My Thoughts

As an avid reader I am continually searching for an amazing new author. Daniel O’Malley’s first book The Rook has the ability to place him as a household name with many devoted followers. The Rook is a fast paced thriller that transforms the genre with it’s wit, originality, and cast of characters. I would not be surprised if the release of The Rook quickly places Danile O’Malley among the rank of authors such as Dan Brown!

The story begins when a woman awakens in a park, soaking wet, and unaware of who she is until she finds a letter among her things. The letter was written by her former self and gave detailed instructions on how to continue living her life as before. She soon learns her name is Myfanwy Thomas (pronounced like Tiffany, but with an M) and that she is a high ranking official in a secret agency that deals with supernatural threats in both the UK and America. Myfanwy Thomas quickly rises to the occasion and embraces her new life as supernatural warrior and company accountant.

I wasn’t even halfway through the novel before I jumped online to research the author, hoping that I would be able to find any previous novels already published. With The Rook being O’Malley’s first book I am already anxiously awaiting his next release. This novel will immediately draw you in a keep you reading well past midnight! If you only read one book this year, this is the one! It is, without a doubt, one of the best books I have read in a long time
