My Thoughts
This is a heartwarming story of love and forgiveness just in time for the holiday season! The story takes place right at Christmastime and was the perfect way to get me in the mood for the holidays! Too often Christmas is about gifts and parties and the true meaning gets lost. This story is a reminder of what the season is really about.
Five lonely, broken people are forced together when a huge snow storm traps them together at Dottie Morgan’s just days before Christmas. They are all in their own ways suffering after experiencing different tragedies in their lives. The one thing they have in common is heartache. They initially fight their predicament and each other until one by one they experience a change of heart as Christmas draws near.
Dottie is a broken, bitter woman after she loses her only son in the war. Gordy is her neighbor who she shares a romantic past with but she blames him for encouraging her son to go off to war. Violet has recently returned from the war herself and while her thirtieth birthday is quickly approaching she is dreading the inevitable label of “spinster.” Jake has also returned from the war to deliver some news to Violet and has an interesting unknown connection to Dottie’s lost son. Arnie is a little boy who lost his father in the war and is hurting for the father figure gone from his life.
All of these people are so different and yet so connected by their brokenness. As they begin to help each other heal, they remember their Father in heaven who still loves them and hasn’t forgotten them. A spirit of Christmas is renewed in each one in their own way and their own time.
The “storm house” as they call it, brings them together as an unlikely family in a time they all needed to seek the healing only God’s grace can bring. It’s a beautiful story of how healing can come even after the most unspeakable of heartache and that opening yourself up to helping others can absolve your own pain. Warren is a beautifully gifted writer with a special way of drawing the reader into her story.
