Married Mom, Solo Parent by Carla Anne Coroy (Review)
For married women who feel like single parents.
Bookstore shelves are full of parenting resources for moms who are newly divorced or widowed. But where do moms turn if they feel like a single parent–but they’re not? Whether he is away on business, deployed in the military, or obsessing over a computer game, dad may not be available for a variety of reasons. Moms who parent in this situation still need help and don’t necessarily relate to the advice given in divorce recovery or single parenting resources.
Married Mom, Solo Parent is a common-sense, down-to-earth look at the struggles wives and mothers face when their husband is not actively involved in family life. Writing from her own experience as a married single mom, Carla Anne Coroy will help wives and mothers sort through their questions, such as: Can I do this alone? How do I raise kids to honor their father? How do I give my children a healthy perspective of marriage if they never see one in action? With practical suggestions, anecdotes, and biblical teaching, this book will encourage moms to see their position as a high calling, to find healing for their worries and frustrations, and to tap into God’s strength for help in facing the daily challenge of being a married mom, solo parent.
My Thoughts
I’ve counseled a few women in my life who have felt disenchanted with the way their lives have turned out. They envisioned marriage and parenthood a bit different then what actually occurred.
Perhaps they imagined that their husband would wake up with them at every diaper changing and midnight feeding. Together they would embark on this amazing journey of parenthood, side by side, hand in hand. Maybe they thought their husbands would know every one of their needs without being asked or told. He would volunteer to watch the kids so she could shower, eat or nap?
Then…reality set it…and it wasn’t all she had planned, dreamed or hoped for. Ever been there? I could bet my last dollar that some of you have.
When I received the opportunity to review this book…I was very intrigued. What caught my attention immediately was that at the very beginning Carla Anne Coroy articulates that no two men are alike and their reasons for not participating more may not be the same. I liked that because I know some men have schedules like firemen or police officers that may not allow them to participate in family life as much as they’d like. What about service men? How can they be here watching and caring for their families at the same time as caring for the safety of our country 1000’s of miles away? Not possible, right? Even still that doesn’t take the loneliness away.
I think Married Mom, Solo Parent is a must-read for any new-bride or mom and the old-timers, like me. It’s refreshing, open and enjoyable. There are little bits of nuggets and wisdom that will help you understand and appreciate your situation a little bit more within the pages of this book.
If you have ever felt lonely or as if you were a single-mom doing it all by yourself…then get a copy of Married Mom, Single Parent. You’ll love knowing you are not alone.

Thanks for your review, Christine! You are so right… there are so many different reasons husbands and dads are not engaged in family life – but regardless of “why” he’s gone, mom is still likely to get lonely and need a little encouragement. That’s what I hope moms find when they read the book.
Blessings to you and your readers! I hope to see you at the Mom Chat party!
