The ballet was very enjoyable to watch as an adult and my three year old daughter watched it intensely too. She just started ballet and especially enjoyed the breaks from the show with the learning section teaching the dance moves passe`, glissade, sauté, sauté arabesque, and echappe sauté, The young children acting out the moves encouraged my daughter to get up and practice the dance moves. I was surprised and encouraged that
she would get up and practice the moves with them while watching a DVD. As a mom, I appreciate the educational aspect of entertainment.
The little fairy narrating really brought it to her age level and she sounded perfect for little three year old ears to hear. However, the “you who” comment from the narrator in-between sections was a little annoying. But, her voice is very cute and fun to listen too. My suggestion would be to replace “you who” with “my friends” or “attention ballerinas” for segment change statement. The Narrator was able to narrate the drama and help the ballet come alive on screen. The drama of the nutcracker kept my daughters attention because of the narrator’s ability to tell the story dramatically.
As we became near to the end of the DVD, the review of the ballet, the new dance moves, and then the pretend play was very effective in keeping my daughters attention. The DVD provided a real live use for ballet and her new ballet class she is taking now. She has something to look forward to do or experience for her self in
the future. I thought the references and focuses on dance moves was most effective and I would recommend this DVD to children under age 6 and beginning ballet.
